QUESTIONS TO ASK ABOUT NIGHT VISION DEVICES

  • Brand
    • Can you actually find information overseas on this brand, or is it just a re-branded “white label” device (often from China or Russia)
    • Specifications – Quality Components, Lenses
    • Its very important that the entire unit is designed to be a quality night vision device; this includes ALL the components, lenses, tubes, body, power supply etc
    • It is pointless putting a good Tube into a budget body without having decent lenses etc as part of complete package
  • Tubes
    • Who actually made the Tube?
    • Quality Counts a lot here – it is the heart of the device
    • We use Harder Digital (German), Photonis (Dutch) and Harris (USA)
  • Performance
    • And what are the specifications beyond the simple FOM (Figure of Merit)?
    • Think about Binoculars, 10×42 – Compare a Swarovski or Lecia to another cheaper brand – its night and day, yet they sound the same (10×42)
    • FOM figures can be a bit the same way, sounds similar but is it?
  • Warranty and Parts
    • What sort of warranty is provided?
    • Again who is the actual Brand; do they have international support
  • Country of Origin
    • Most Night Vision Devices that are above the ‘personal’ level are quite restricted with the likes of ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) can you be sure that you will always be able to obtain parts?
    • Governments in this current environment are often placing sanctions on other nations – look at the current situations with Russia and China
